Thanks for stopping by my new wine blog, "It's Only Wine!".
On the surface, there doesn't seem to much of a demand out there for yet another blog about wine. A Google search on "wine blogs" pull up about 3 million results. But if you dig a little deeper, I don't think that most wine blogs speak to the average wine drinker. My goal with this blog is to help demystify the world of wine, and hopefully help you all make somewhat educated decision when buying wine.
I thought I would start my blog with a little FAQ...
Q: What do you know about wine, and why should I take your advice?
A: I would put my knowledge of wine somewhere in-between Robert Parker and my Aunt Ruthie, who puts ice cubes in her glass of white zinfandel. My wine education is an ongoing process, and there's probably more that I don't know, than I do. But, I like to think that I have a good sense for what most people are looking for in wine, and I hope that I convince more people to get outside of their comfort zone with wine.
Q: Are you going to review and score wine?
A: Reviews. Yes. Scoring? Hell no! This is probably going to be the subject of a future post, but way too many people put way too much emphasis on a score when it comes to wine. Don't get me started...
Q: So, if you aren't some kind of super-smart wine geek, then why would I learn from your your blog?
A: Let me share with you a random tasting note and score that I pulled off of the interwebs, written by a professed super-smart wine geek:
"Very perceptible acidity, almost chewy, kirschwasser, dried dates on the midpalate and through the finish earthy and cherry stones on finish, long finish develops a bit of that japanese salted plum sweet and mineral quality, espresso foam on the finale." 94 points.
OK, boys and girls...what did you learn from that review and score? Anyone?
Unfortunately, this sort of obtuse, intellectual purple prose is well represented in the wine world today, and it's one of the main reasons why many people find wine to be "inaccessible". There will be none of this B.S. on this blog, and if it ever happens then I would hope that you, the loyal reader, will throw it back in my face.
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope that I can give you a reason to come by more often!
